Dulquer Salmaan is gearing up for two new films, with the first being a Tamil period drama titled Kaantha. The film is set to release next year and is currently in production.
Dulquer as M.K. Thyagaraja Bhagavathar
Recent reports suggest that Dulquer will portray M.K. Thyagaraja Bhagavathar, widely regarded as Tamil cinema’s first superstar. The film is expected to explore Bhagavathar’s involvement in the infamous Lakshmikanthan case.
The Lakshmikanthan Case
Lakshmikanthan, a journalist, was fatally stabbed in 1944. The subsequent investigation implicated Thyagaraja Bhagavathar and several prominent personalities. Although Bhagavathar was eventually released, the legal battle tarnished his career, leaving him in poverty by the time he passed away at 49.
Audience Expectations
While portraying such an iconic figure could enhance Dulquer’s reputation, some fans feel he is treading familiar ground. Comparisons have been drawn to his role as Gemini Ganesan in Mahanati, with critics urging him to explore more diverse characters.
A Return to Tamil Cinema
Kaantha marks Dulquer’s return to Tamil cinema after a two-year hiatus. Set in 1950s Madras, the film boasts a stellar cast, including Rana Daggubati, Samuthirakani, and Bhagyashri Borse. It is produced by Spirit Media and Wayfarer Films.
Will Kaantha cement Dulquer’s versatility, or will it reinforce criticisms of repetitiveness? Fans eagerly await the film’s release for answers.
