Suriya’s 600 Crore Project in Jeopardy: Is the Budget Too High?
19 November 2024, 6:53 pmSuriya’s recent release, Kanguva, had a budget of 350 crores and was billed as a major Pan-Indian film from Kollywood. Released on November 14th, the film, however, received poor audience reviews.
Following Kanguva, Suriya is set to lead two upcoming projects: Suriya 44, directed by Karthik Subbaraj, and Suriya 45, directed by RJ Balaji.
Amid this, there have been reports suggesting that Suriya’s highly anticipated Dream Project, Karna, helmed by Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra and backed by Excel Entertainment, is facing significant financial challenges. Sources reveal that Excel Entertainment has requested the director to cut the estimated budget, which currently stands at a staggering 600 crores.
The production house is reportedly considering backing out of the project unless the budget is slashed. Adding fuel to the fire, critics on social media are questioning Mehra’s track record, pointing out that his last successful film, Bhaag Milkha Bhaag (2013), was over a decade ago, with his more recent films not living up to expectations. They argue that investing 600 crores in a director with such a slow output is a risky proposition.
It appears that Karna is in a precarious position. It remains to be seen whether Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra will agree to reduce the budget and continue with Excel Entertainment or seek a new production house for his ambitious project.
