HMPV Virus Affects Infants in Kolkata and Gujarat

India has reported two more cases of the HMPV (Human Metapneumovirus) virus, one in Gujarat and the other in Kolkata. A 6-month-old infant in Kolkata has been diagnosed with the virus, while a 2-month-old child from Gujarat, who arrived from Rajasthan, has also tested positive. The Gujarat Health Minister, Rushikesh Patel, assured the public that the state has sufficient healthcare resources to manage the cases, including enough hospital beds, ventilators, and oxygen supplies. He emphasized that there is no need to panic, as the situation is under control, and no advisory has been issued by central authorities yet.

Earlier, the Union Health Ministry revealed that two cases were detected in Karnataka through routine surveillance. A 3-month-old female infant with bronchopneumonia was diagnosed with HMPV at Baptist Hospital in Bengaluru, while another 8-month-old male infant tested positive on January 3. Both children have been discharged and are recovering.

HMPV, which causes respiratory illnesses, is already circulating globally, and India has seen a few cases of the virus. However, according to current data from the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), there has been no unusual surge in Influenza-Like Illness (ILI) or Severe Acute Respiratory Illness (SARI) in the country.

Dr. Vishal Rao, a surgical oncologist at Bengaluru’s HCG Hospital, noted that while there is no vaccine for HMPV, immunity from previous flu shots and COVID-19 vaccines may provide some protection. He further explained that HMPV spreads through droplets from coughing, making it important to take precautions.
