Gautham Vasudev Menon Reflects on Dhruva Natchathiram Challenges
Dhruva Natchathiram, the much-awaited Tamil spy action thriller starring Vikram, has been in the making for over a decade. Initially announced in 2013 with Suriya in the lead, the project faced significant delays and changes, including the actor’s exit. Recently, director and producer Gautham Vasudev Menon opened up about Suriya’s decision to step away from the film during an interview with Behindwoods.

Expressing his disappointment, Gautham stated that Suriya should have trusted him, especially after their successful collaborations on Kaakha Kaakha and Vaaranam Aayiram. “He shouldn’t even have questioned whether to do Dhruva Natchathiram or not. He should’ve just agreed,” Gautham remarked, emphasizing their strong professional history.

Gautham revealed that during the making of Vaaranam Aayiram, Suriya showcased exceptional courage by taking on the dual roles of father and son. Despite their past successes, Suriya was hesitant about Dhruva Natchathiram. The actor reportedly asked for a reference point for the story, which Gautham explained was unnecessary as the film was entirely original.

According to Gautham, Suriya’s involvement would have given the project a different action style and aura. “He didn’t have anything to lose—I was the producer,” the director added, highlighting that the actor’s trust would have been enough to bring the vision to life.
Though Gautham acknowledged that rejection is part of the filmmaking process, Suriya’s decision to decline this particular project left a lasting impact. The director concluded by expressing deep disappointment, hoping the film’s eventual release would still resonate with audiences.
