1000 Crore Film: Why Is the Tamil Industry Struggling?
13 November 2024, 2:50 pmKanguva’s Struggles: Tamil Industry’s Lack of Support for Big Dreams
Suriya’s highly anticipated Kanguva is set to release in just three days, but the film is already facing unexpected hurdles. Expected to be the first 1000-crore film from Tamil cinema, Kanguva is struggling to secure large-capacity screens in Tamil Nadu. The ongoing success of Sivakarthikeyan’s Amaran is dominating the screens, continuing its strong run into its third week
As a result, Kanguva will only secure 50% of the available screens in Tamil Nadu, with its gross capacity expected to stay below 40%. This is a major setback for a film of such high ambitions.
The film’s release was delayed last October due to Rajinikanth’s Vettaiyan, a film that turned out to be a commercial disappointment, wasting a prime release slot. Now, with Amaran still performing well, Kanguva faces a tough battle for screen space.
Despite the team’s efforts to elevate Tamil cinema, they’re not receiving the support they need from the industry. This lack of backing could explain why Tamil cinema struggles to deliver a 1000-crore blockbuster, unlike its Telugu and Bollywood counterparts.
