Hansal Mehta Lashes Out at Naga Vamsi Over Alleged Copy of Scam

The Controversy Surrounding Lucky Bhaskar and Bollywood

Filmmaker Hansal Mehta has called out Telugu producer Naga Vamsi, alleging that his film Lucky Bhaskar borrows heavily from Mehta’s acclaimed web series Scam. The accusation arose after Vamsi made remarks criticizing Bollywood’s focus on catering to Mumbai’s posh areas like Bandra and Juhu.

Lucky Bhaskar, set in the 1990s, features Dulquer Salmaan as a lower-middle-class man who resorts to financial scams to escape debt and humiliation. Comparisons have been drawn to the Scam franchise, which focuses on real-life financial scandals, including the 1992 stock market scam by Harshad Mehta and the 2003 stamp paper counterfeiting scandal.

Vamsi’s bold statement about Bollywood’s target audience and his claim that “Mumbai didn’t sleep” after Pushpa 2’s success provoked further reactions. Mehta sarcastically replied, “I live in Mumbai. Been sleeping really well.” Similarly, director Siddharth Anand defended Bollywood, asserting Mumbai’s authenticity as the “city that never sleeps.”

Trade analyst Sumit Kadel criticized Vamsi for his arrogance, but Vamsi clarified that his comments were misinterpreted and that he shares a respectful relationship with producer Boney Kapoor.

The escalating debate has ignited conversations around originality, respect in the film industry, and inter-regional dynamics between Bollywood and South Indian cinema.
