Enquiry ordered in Bipin Rawat’s death

The defence officials on Thursday retrieved the Flight Recorder, more popularly known as ‘Black Box’, of the ill-fated Indian Air Force helicopter that crashed in Tamil Nadu. Chief of Defence Staff, General Bipin Rawat and 12 others were killed in the incident when the Mi-17VH helicopter they were travelling in crashed and went up in flames, leaving only one survivor. Meanwhile, defence minister Rajnath Singh made the statement on the incident in Parliament and said that the Indian Air Force (IAF) has ordered a tri-service inquiry and the investigation will be led by Air Marshal Manavendra Singh.

Gen Bipin Rawat was on a scheduled visit to Defence Services Staff College, Wellington to interact with the Student Officers. The Air Force Mi 17 V5 helicopter took off from Sulur Air Base at 11:48am yesterday and was expected to land at Wellington by 12:15pm.

Air Traffic Control at Sulur Air Base lost contact with the helicopter at approximately 12:08pm.
Subsequently, few locals spotted a fire in the forest near Coonoor and rushed to the spot where they observed the wreckage of a military helicopter engulfed in flames.
