Despite the low number of devotees visiting the Venkateswara temple in Tirumala, Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) saw a Rs 36.02 crore hundial collection from 4.14 lakh devotees in June, 200% more than in May. According to TTD data, 1.67 lakh devotees offered their hair in the same month. During the second wave, the hundial income had dropped to as low as Rs 11.95 crore. In March this year, the hundial income alone stood at Rs 104 crore.
TTD had estimated an income of over Rs 1,300 crore from hundi offerings in 2020-21. Due to the second wave, the estimates fell to Rs 725 crore. With this, TTD annual budget was revised to Rs 2,553 crore. The TTD had limited the number of devotees to contain the virus. According to TTD officials, during summer, there used to be a huge rush of devotees. Now, due to the second wave, that number has thinned.
