Political Shockwave in Salem: AIADMK Member Murdered, New Law Enforced for the First Time

A four-member gang mercilessly murdered AIADMK functionary M Shanmugam on Wednesday in Dhadagapatti, Salem, in an unexpected turn of events. The crime has caused a stir in the town, prompting concerns about safety and political rivalry.

Suspects have been quickly taken into custody by the Salem city police about the murder, one of whom is the spouse of DMK councilor S Dhanalakshmi. As the inquiry progresses, authorities are now stepping up their attempts to find the missing councilor.

According to N Mathvanan, the city’s deputy commissioner of police, this is the first case in the city to be filed under the recently passed Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) statute. 

Section 103(2) says a minimum of five individuals involved in a murder case motivated by race, caste, community, gender, nativity, language, or beliefs face the possibility of death or life imprisonment in jail, along with a fine.
