Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin on Tuesday informed the State Assembly that Vinayaka Chathurthi celebrations in public was banned based on the Centre’s guidelines and to prevent spread of COVID.

Responding to BJP Floor Leader Nainar Nagendran, who urged the state government to allow installation of idols in public to celebratre the festival, which falls on September 10, the Chief Minister said the Union Home Ministry on August 29 had written to the Chief Secretaries of all States advising them to take suitable measures to avoid large gatherings during the festive season.

In line with the Centre’s guidelines and taking into account the significant spike in daily cases in neighbouring Kerala because of the relaxations announced for the Onam and Bakrid festivals, the Tamil Nadu government banned  installation of idols in public places during the Vinayaka Chaturthi celebrations this year.

In pursuant to the Centre’s communication, the State government issued a Government Order on August 30 banning installation of idols in public places or to hold any kind of celebrations in public places on account of Vinayaka Chaturthi.
